Canavan Research Illinois (also
known as Canavan Disease Research) is exceptionally responsive to the
Canavan families, physicians, and researchers that contact this
charity. We are devoted to all the victims of Canavan disease (and
their families) world wide. We put Canavan families in touch
with one another, and further provide information
regarding clinical trials, and genetic testing.
If you are a parent or family member of a child with Canavan disease,
please let us know so that we can send you a copy of our free 'Canavan
Disease Quality of Life Guide'.
If you are a dedicated medical
researcher in concert with our critical mission to focus on clinical
programs to benefit the children currently battling Canavan disease,
please feel free to submit your proposal.

Become a Volunteer
We have a devoted group of volunteers who have
helped us tremendously to make a difference for these incredible
children who have so few advocates. If you would like to join our
team in the battle against Canavan
disease by becoming a volunteer, please contact Ilyce Randell or Peggy Shapiro-Nyeholt
at 1-800-833-2194 for more information.
Our youngest volunteer
is Rianna Weil,
a 7th grader, who just joined us in the battle against Canavan after her
mother learned about the disease. Rianna enjoys skiing, acting,
singing, shopping and hanging out with her friends... but this year she decided to become involved with Canavan Research Illinois
as her Mitzvah project. Rianna states that she is "honored to
be part of the crusade to help raise awareness for Canavan disease"
and we are fortunate to have both Rianna as well as her mother Marla Schimpf on our team.
As you can see - Rianna enjoys a special friendship with Max. Both Marla and "Ri"
have been very helpful in getting items donated for our silent
auction and selling our 'Miracle Bracelets' to help raise much
needed funds.
Mary LaLoggia (Affordable
Floral Art) has generously donated magnificent floral
designs for every one of our benefits. Both Mary, and her
husband Brent Bauer (Allied
Heating) always donate items for auction and are
always there to help in anyway they can. Mary, Brent and Max are
great friends and have a loving friendship.
Mira & Neil Zweiban (Dreams and Delights)
has gifted the charity every year with her incredible
confections for the guest tables and creates unbelievable gift
baskets for our silent auction. Both Mira and her husband (trust
attorney Neil Zweiban) have
become true advocates for all the children battling Canavan
disease.
Lisa and Tony Balter &
Donna Zimmerman - They are the first faces you see
when you come to the 'Ball'. They sign you in, ring up the
auction items, and help to set up displays on the auction
tables. Donna also creates our guests table cards, Tony is
a raffle ticket seller extraordinaire and Lisa is always willing
to help stuff and seal invitations. The Balters, and their
children, are great friends of Max.
Paulette DeLegge (LeCave)
always has a wide variety of items to donate for our silent
auction. Paulette is on our event committee and is always there
early to set up the auction tables and she is sensational at
raffle ticket sales. Paulette accepted a Proclamation from
the Village of Palatine
proclaiming Oct. 2007 as Canavan
Disease Awareness Month in the Village.
Constance J. M. Swift -
Deeply dedicated to our mission to support cutting edge research
to treat and cure Canavan disease, Constance has been instrumental in CRI receiving grants
from the Swift Charitable Foundation.
Bobbie and Ron Fogel
- they arranged to have the
Continental
Restaurant donate
10% of any diner's bill to this charity. All you have to do is
ask to sign the Max Randell/ Canavan
Book and the restaurant will donate 10% to the
charity.
Bobbie and Jack Alscher - Bobbie has consistently arranged to have
employer (United Stationers)
make a generous donation to the charity on behalf of the
employees. Bobbie and Jack are fixtures at our "setting up" the
items for auction at our events.
Gail Musial - Thanks to
Gail we always have tickets to live theater events for auction
at our benefits.
Barry & Terri Katz
- They are fixtures at our "setting up" the items
for auction at our events and Terri is a great help at getting items donated for auction.
Bob Nyeholt
- Another fixture at setting up our auction tables. Bob is
always there to move and carry things and to help us, in
everyway possible, to make the auction tables look great.
Kim & Jeff Dalman
- Kim is
outstanding at gathering groups of people to attend our events
and is instrumental at making the events such a great success as
well as soliciting items for our auction tables.
Jeff has been wonderful in
arranging to have his employer donate to Canavan Research. (as a
501(c)(3) charity Canavan Research Illinois qualifies for
employer matching 'Gifts in Kind' donations). The Dalmans, and their children, are great friends of Max.
Carol Lechin
- has generously hosted a charity presentation & jewelry sales
event, at her lovely home, to help us to create awareness
of CD and raise much needed funds for research.
Linda Wilson
- talented graphic designer - Linda designed our first heartbreakingly beautiful brochure and also designed the moving website canavandisease.org.
Maxine Baratz
- Maxine arranged a 'Carson's Fundraising and Awareness
Day' and helped at the booth by selling tickets and
educating shoppers about Canavan disease and what we are doing
to make a difference for these incredible children who have so
few advocates. Maxine also donates items for our silent auction.
Maxine has also suggested to her co-workers that they write in
'Canavan Research Illinois' as their United Way for
contribution as the charity qualifies as a write in.
Martha and Robert Alter -
Devoted out of state devoted volunteers who first saw Max
on Leeza and became involved with the charity - they attend each
year's Canavan Charity Ball and always have items for auction
with them. Max has become very close with the Alters and looks
forward to seeing them each year. Cappy Silver -
Deeply dedicated to our mission to support cutting edge research
to treat and cure Canavan disease and raise awareness of
Canavan, Cappy has been instrumental in CRI receiving grants
from the Ralph D. and Lois R. Silver Foundation.
